As the naked motorcycle segment continues to grow across the world, Ducati continues to listen to riders of their famed Monster line, making improvements every year.
Ducati Monster 696, the Italian manufacturer took much rider advice, and added a 20mm bar-riser for added comfort, 43mm Marzocchi front suspension, and two new color schemes. For added safety, the Monster is also offered with optional ABS.
Ducati maintains the "less-is-more" philosophy in the naked motorcycle segment, and this is what continually makes the Monster 696 a global leader. Every feature on this machine was carefully designed, including the race-derived chassis and the legendary Ducati L-Twin engine that powers the Monster 696.
Monster 696: Power Trip
The 696 engine produces 80hp (59kW) and 50.6lb-ft (7kgm) of torque ensuring a smooth and powerful delivery for a relaxed and enjoyable ride as well competitive and owner-friendly service intervals of 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers).
The highly efficient, lightweight engine uses a bore and stroke of 88 x 57.2mm and, like the 796, features an advanced APTC ‘wet clutch. With a ‘slipper type action that prevents destabilizing of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting, the APTC clutch also gives the extra benefit of a super-light feel at the lever, a great benefit in stop-start city traffic.
The oil-bath clutch represents a power-enhancing weight reduction over the ‘dry system as well as having a considerably quieter operation.
Providing a deep and rich exhaust tone within current regulations is no mean feat, but the Monster 696 definitely provides Ducatis famous L-Twin sound.
Its bold, high-level twin mufflers not only make a striking style statement, but also provide a healthy increase in both power and torque and a discrete positioning for two lambda exhaust gas sensors, crucial for the optimization of fuelling and emissions.
Monster 696: High-Tech Chassis / Suspension / Brakes
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminum rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of all the Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and also enables a very useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel.
The brand new lightweight aluminum sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the aluminum footrest hangers and swingarm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monsters stylish lines.
Outstanding handling and control is now provided by brand new 43mm Marzocchi forks offering 120mm (4.7in) of finely controlled travel. At the rear, a progressive Sachs monoshock unit provides adjustability in both spring preload and damping.
Lightweight 3-spoke aluminum alloy wheels increase agility and reduce rider effort and use 120/60ZR front and 160/60ZR rear Pirelli Angel ST tyres. The end result provides a light, predictable and confidence- inspiring "feel" with outstanding stability at a wide range of speeds.
The Brembo brakes deliver exceptional braking power front and rear, enhancing rider safety. 320mm front floating discs are gripped by four-piston, radially mounted callipers, while a 245mm rear disc works in combination with a twin-piston calliper. This powerful braking set-up offers unrivalled feel and feedback that inspires confidence across a broader spectrum of riding abilities. Riders looking for even more security will benefit from the optional ABS system.
The optional ABS is designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy braking or when braking in low grip conditions; the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a specific safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate caliper to avoid wheel lock.
The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario.
Every carefully selected component of the Monster 696 has a net benefit to the overall lightweight of the machine. The dry weight of 161kg (355lb) not only enhances maneuverability and ease of use, but also contributes directly to increased performance of both braking and acceleration.
Monster 696: Essential Instrumentation
Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential data by default, and even more by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear.
Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection.
In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobilizer status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.
Monster 696: Riding with Ease
The riding position of the Monster 696 has been specifically designed to put the rider firmly in control. With its low 770mm (30.3in) seat height, new 20mm higher, easy-to-reach handlebar position and user-friendly 4- point adjustable levers suitable for all hand sizes, every rider will find it easy to master.
The beautifully sculpted fuel tank cover allows maximum comfort and control and the narrowing of the ‘waist area of the 696 has the same effect as lowering the seat height, making it easier to get both feet flat on the ground.
Careful attention to every detail has led to a substantial weight saving, making the Monster 696 the lightest in its class at an impressive 161kg (355lb) (dry weight). Passenger comfort and safety are also carefully considered, with neat, under-seat grab handles molded into the seat unit maximizing pillion security without detracting from the legendary Monster 696 styling.
Monster 696+
Throughout its long and established history, the Monsters cult following has always attracted personalization. With Ducatis tempting in-house accessory range offering so many custom-fit parts, nearly every Monster is different.
The 696+ is a factory-personalized model featuring some neat designer touches. A beautiful single seat cover creates the clean look of a racing seat and easily unclips to allow room for a passenger while the neat micro-bikini fairing adds a custom touch to the front end. Options may vary in some countries.

Aprilia RSV 1000 Mille R
Competition may come and go, but the Aprilia RSV 1000 R remains the unquestioned top dog among supersport motorcycles for its amazing handling on road and racetrack. The Aprilia RSV 1000 R has shown its competitive edge in world endurance racing, where it is the only production twin able to compete on even terms with the best four cylinder machines in the world, as demonstrated by the excellent results achieved. Legendary races like the Le Mans 24 hours and the massacring Bol d’Or 24 hours have shown exactly how effective the twin cylinder Aprilia RSV 1000 R is on the racetrack , and how totally reliable it is too.
Endurance racing has provided more than just an unforgettable experience. It has served as a valuable test bench for the latest technical solutions now appearing on Aprilia production bikes.
The Aprilia RSV 1000 R is determined to maintain its supremacy as the best sports twin money can buy, for its advanced technology and for its amazing performance.
But what counts the most is the fact that the Aprilia RSV 1000 R is still the bike to beat when it comes to ease of riding. Because riders feel so instantly confident on an Aprilia RSV 1000 R, they really can ride at the limits of their abilities and stay totally relaxed too.
The benefits are obvious in terms of less physical and mental stress, faster and safer motorcycling and the ability to remain fully concentrated for far longer, factors that contribute to success on the racetrack and safety on the road.
The main characteristics of the RSV 1000 R:
· Öhlins Racing fork with TiN (Titanium Nitride) coated stanchions and radial caliper mountings;
· The latest generation V60 Magnesium engine with Ø 33 mm exhaust valves;
· Larger diameter exhaust headers;
· External catalytic converters, installed nearer to the header pipes for improved efficiency and respect for the environment;
· Euro 3 homologation.
Constant technical development has enabled Aprilia’s engineers to carry on improving the performance of the motorcycle that already represented the state of the art for twin cylinder supersport machines. In this latest RSV 1000 R, the V60 Magnesium engine is not only cleaner but even more powerful, confirming its reputation as the world’s mightiest production twin. The modifications needed to achieve homologation to strict Euro 3 standards have not stopped Aprilia squeezing another 4 horsepower out of this amazing engine. The latest powerplant delivers 105.24 kW (143 HP) at the crank to push the bike to a top speed of over 280 km/h, aided by improved aerodynamics and even more efficient engine breathing.
Even the chassis has been updated using the experience gained from a year of international racing that has seen the RSV defeat all rivals on the world’s stock racing circuits.
This unbeatable engine and chassis go hand in hand with top-quality components, and an even higher level of prestige equipment, placing the Aprilia RSV 1000 R in a class of its own not only in performance but in quality to price ratio too.
V60 MAGNESIUM ENGINE
The 1000 cc V60 Magnesium engine has long been the standard setter for production twins, but constant evolution and development at Aprilia’s R&D department have now made it even better.
33 mm exhaust valves and new, larger diameter exhaust headers have been fitted to improve engine breathing. In this form the V60 Magnesium now puts out even more power, topping 143 HP at 10,000 rpm without losing any of its legendary usability and proverbial Aprilia reliability.
The new satin finish silencers have catalytic converters installed nearer to the collector pipes. This solution has reduced converter activation time by 50% while further reducing the level of exhaust emissions. The Aprilia RSV 1000 R conforms easily to the strict limits required for Euro 3 homologation. The second section of exhaust has also been extended by 200 mm to boost torque at low revs.
Optimised fluid dynamics inside the cylinder heads has been enhanced by improved mapping of the combined ignition and fuel injection systems to achieve higher power throughout the useful rev range.
The V60 Magnesium breathes through the ‘Air Runner’ dynamic air scoop located in the middle of the nose fairing. This has been redesigned to increase air flow to the engine’s ‘lungs’. The Air Runner scoop is located precisely where dynamic pressure is highest, exactly along the bike’s centreline.
From the scoop, an air duct passes through the steering head to take ram air to the generous 10.3 litre airbox.
A choke valve inside the duct, controlled by the engine ECU, regulates flow to provide the engine with air at exactly the right volume and pressure. The engine therefore packs incredible punch right through its extended speed range, enabling the rev limiter to be set at 11,000 rpm.
The mighty roar of the V60 Magnesium is muffled by two differential volume Helmotz resonators to reduce intake noise at the most critical engine speeds.
The airbox also houses an idling motor. This operates an electronically controlled valve that deviates air downstream of the butterfly valve to make it easier to start the engine from cold and to stabilise engine idling.
The Air Runner also performs a structural function. It incorporates two lightweight aluminium arms to hold the cockpit fairing and headlight so that there is no need for ugly brackets.
A new panel type air filter reduces pressure drop and improves engine efficiency.
The engine’s fuel injection system features 57 mm throttle bodies and one injector per cylinder.
Thank to the Air Runner ram air scoop, pressure in the airbox increases as the bike accelerates, leading to a 3% gain in power at maximum speed.
A new generation engine management unit, made in conjunction with Siemens VDO, controls all engine parameters. The ECU receives real time signals from 15 parameter sensors and processes these to control the actuators in real time too. (Parameters include air and coolant temperature; atmospheric, airbox and oil pressure; Lambda sensor oxygen level; crankshaft, camshaft, and rear wheel speed; throttle position, side stand, clutch and neutral position; and battery voltage.)
The flash EPROM already contains racing mapping for unrestricted exhausts. Aprilia service engineers can easily change mapping on request from customers who intend to use their bikes exclusively on the racetrack.
All engine data passes through a CAN (Controlled Area Network) line to the instrument panel, which also acts as a diagnostic terminal. In the unlikely event of a malfunction, it is a simple job for service engineers to identify problems. The CAN line uses only two wires to transmit all data. This simplifies the electrical system enormously as well as reducing the total weight of the bike.
The RSV 1000 R also has a close ratio gearbox, to make it easier to make full use of the amazing power of the V60 Magnesium engine.
Despite so much technical evolution, the characteristics that made the original RSV stand out are still there.
- Longitudinal 60° V twin engine with 4 valves per cylinder and double overhead camshaft, driven by a mixed chain and gear system.
- Electronic fuel injection with 57 mm throttle bodies, one injector per cylinder, and an ‘Air Runner’ ram air scoop.
- CDI ignition with one plug per cylinder. Ignition is controlled by the same integrated engine management system that also controls fuel injection.
- Dry sump lubrication with double trochoid pump, separate oil tank and oil cooler.
- Mixed gear/chain valve timing drive with the two gears (one per timing chain) located in the crankcase to reduce cylinder head dimensions.
The RSV 1000 R’s sophisticated twin cylinder engine also incorporates the following exclusive Aprilia patents:
- AVDC (Anti Vibration Double Countershaft).
- Hydraulic action clutch with radial master cylinder assisted by the patented PPC (Pneumatic Power Clutch) system to control rear wheel bounce during fierce braking.
FRAME
Years of racing at the highest levels have allowed Aprilia’s R&D section to design a frame that is acknowledged as the best production bike frame around.
One of Aprilia’s fixed objectives when designing the RSV 1000 R frame was to achieve perfectly centralised mass. In line with Aprilia practice, the frame incorporates aluminium-silicon castings and Peraluman 450 pressings. The frame has been optimised by extensive finite element analysis and boasts excellent torsional rigidity though it weighs only 9,650 grams, a figure matched only by specialist racing frames.
Aprilia’s obsessive search for perfection, plus the experience gained from production bike racing has nevertheless led to small but important improvements to what was already the best frame on any machine of this type. The steering head’s rake angle has increased from 24° 45’ to 25° to give a slightly longer trail. Stability is better as a result, so that the new RSV 1000 R inspires even more confidence than before, without losing out on its acclaimed agility.
The new RSV 1000 R swingarm is made from extruded Peraluman and Al Si7 castings. Its double arch design provides a clear passage for the new twin silencer exhaust system.
Here too, cross-sections and wall thicknesses have been optimised using finite element analysis. The RSV 1000 R swingarm weighs only 4,860 grams, well under the swingarm weight benchmark of 5 kg.
SUSPENSION
The fantastic Öhlins Racing fork fitted as standard to the RSV 1000 R represents the state-of-the-art for this most important of all components in determining how a motorcycle handles. The new fork has 43 mm stanchions with titanium nitride coating for a friction-free sliding action. Its advanced design with longer sleeves and shorter fork bottoms reduces load at two critical points, the slide bush and the stanchion to fork bottom joint). Wheel travel is 120 mm.
Like all top racing forks, the Öhlins allows precision adjustment of compression and rebound damping as well as spring preload.
The Sachs rear monoshock incorporates a separate piggy back nitrogen cylinder and is also adjustable in preload, compression and rebound. A characteristic unique to Aprilia is that the length of the monoshock can be adjusted directly from the unit itself so that the rear end of the bike can be raised or lowered to achieve whatever setup may be required and to match rider preferences and other suspension adjustments.
BRAKES
Top supersports demand top quality brakes. The RSV 1000 R is again at the cutting edge of technology, and is equipped with Triple Bridge, radial caliper front brakes developed by Aprilia in conjunction with Brembo. The 320 mm floating steel discs on the front wheel feature narrower braking bands for reduced wheel weight and inertia and therefore more agile handling.
The RSV 1000 R’s radial calipers are combined with a radial master cylinder to form the most sophisticated braking system fitted to any current production bike.
The front and rear braking circuits both use aeronautical metal braid hoses to eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional rubber brake lines, guaranteeing maximum braking precision.
COMPONENTS
What places the Aprilia RSV 1000 R in a class of its own is the care taken in its design and manufacture and the attention paid to every single component on the bike. The result is increased performance and functionality, with reduced weight and a quality of finish that no other bike can equal.
The following components deserve a special mention:
- Öhlins Racing fork with titanium nitride (TiN) coated stanchions.
- Aluminium steering pin and bottom yoke.
- Brembo Triple Bridge radial front brake calipers.
- Forged caliper mounting blocks for greater rigidity and stability under braking.
- The combined digital and analog instrument panel receives data on all engine control parameters over a CAN line and incorporates memory to allow it to act as an integral part of the self-diagnostics system. The instrument panel provides the same readouts as the previous model (including a self timer with a 40 lap memory), but is now extremely modern and compact in design and weighs only 220 grams. All functions are controlled by three conveniently located keys. The LED backlighting may be set to three levels and is white for the analog instruments and red for the digital display.
- The headlight cluster incorporates four lights for perfect night riding vision. The great care taken over the design and finish of the RSV 1000 R also transpires from little but important details like bulb holders made from blue anodised aluminium.
- The white lens direction indicators are fully integrated in the bike’s body. The front indicators are moulded into the rear view mirrors while the rear indicators are built into the tail. This means that there is no need to remove them for track use. The rear number plate holder can also be removed quickly and easily to comply with competition regulations.
- Even the ignition key is specially made for the RSV 1000 R and carries an internal identification code. The ignition block has an immobiliser fitted as standard.
- The alloy wheels share the same forked spoke design as the exclusive forged wheels of the RSV 1000 R Factory

2009 Suzuki GSX R1000 Review
Whether this particular smacks associated with a few appropriately earned aloofness may depend on a person: Basically, Suzuki recognized the duty associated with creating its brand new liter-class missile like a problem within providing the bicycle using the overall performance in order to surpass “… its greatest competitor – the present GSX-R. ”
Within the aggressive world associated with sportbikes, the very effective motor is usually the actual extremely important motivator making sure a great chance from successful titles, each in the monitor as well as within the display room. However producing efficient utilization of the actual amazing hp on present literbikes generally creates an entire brand new group of problems.
To that particular finish, Suzuki offers designed a brand new twin-spar light weight aluminum body. Obviously fat loss came into being, however therefore do the wheelbase right now 10mm smaller. For all of us within the Ough. Utes. which distinction appears like this particular: fifty five. 3 in . versus. fifty five. 7 in .. Nevertheless, swingarm duration elevated through 32mm by way of the actual decrease in motor duration. The aim at the rear of the brand new swingarm is actually two fold: keep balance by way of decreased back suspension deadlift, as well as improve back fatigue traction force. Rake as well as path possess elevated hardly noticeable quantities.
Interest provided the brand new motor as well as brand new body might’ve eliminated second to none in the event that this weren’t with regard to using Showa Corporation’s large newsmaker, the actual Big Piston Fork, or even more generally, BPF. The actual BPF originated through top-level street rushing occasions in the last couple of years, along with a race-application version had been accustomed to excellent achievement through Suzuki within current Suzuka 8-Hour occasions. The actual BPF is actually fairly a new comer to manufacturing motorbikes: its just additional positioning so far is actually about the 09 Kawasaki ZX-6R within 41mm taste, as the Gixxer Thou’s BPF offers bigger 43mm stanchions.
Of those design improvements, a good all-new device solar panel is probably probably the most significant alter. The brand new clocks notable modifications incorporate a much more noticeable A-B-C show through S-DMS (Suzuki-Drive Mode Selector) along with a brand new pré-réglable 4-bulb change gentle program instead of the actual solitary change gentle through this past year. The brand new change gentle program includes 3 yellow-colored lights which gentle sequentially resulting in a bigger last whitened gentle. Flexible rpm configurations for that lighting could be produced in two hundred and fifty, 500 as well as 1, 000 rpm increments.
Bicycles tend to be producing their own method to sellers right now. They’ll are available in Black/Matte Dark, Red/Black (the actual red-colored is actually much more Maroon), not to mention conventional GSX-R Blue/White, just about all in the MSRP associated with $12, 899.

2011 BMW F800R Review
New F800R is to use a variable system pressure of the fuel that feeds only the amount of fuel and timing based on the required power. This makes it more efficient than continuous flow, which varies only requires fuel, and the variance of the times, and eliminates the need and the fuel return hose. This refinement of the unit requires four times the processing power, and BMW says it offers better power delivery, better economy and lower emissions.

DYL Mini 100 Review
It has been introduced in one color, red only. At first glance, the new release looks like the senior model of Dhoom that’s why people are calling it Dhoom 100. Many of its design features are identical with its Dhoom model. DYL Motorcycles has first time introduced Euro II technology in their motorcycles after being introduced by Atlas Honda and Pak Suzuki Ltd. The company has become the third bike’s manufacturer to embrace Euro II technology in Pakistan.
Coming to expectations connected with this bike, company has named “Mini 100” as “Power Pack Economy”. With the 4-stroke powerful 100cc engine conforming to Euro II emission standards, the new bike is expected to see amazing performance on road. You will be enjoying the power of 100cc bike for the economy of 70cc. The mini 100 has been equipped with all newly designed head light, new smart back light, new attractive speedometer and new sporty silencer or muffler. The hand grips are also modified in new DYL mini 100 2013. Among other components of the bike, it has fuel tank of 9.5 Litre, 4-stroke single cylinder engine, sporty and spacious seat, wider mudguard and indicators with same shape as in previous Dhoom. So it is a quality vehicle in terms of design and performance and comparing the price with its features, the bike is worth buying.
Those who love to feel power with economy should look upon 2013 Mini 100 by DYL Motorcycles. Whether you are a university student, a professional or just an ordinary guy who is excited about trying newly launched bikes, Mini 100 will surely be a great entertainment yet very economical in budget. The bike in terms of maintenance cost and fuel consumption will be a lifelong vehicle. For that budget and economy, the value is worth noticing. After learning a lot from the past, the company has added a higher value in the new mini 100. The company has struggled for earning a good repo in the market. Its first 4-stroke model was Yamaha Junoon which was a disappointing experience for the company. It was that time since DYL Motorcycles worked a lot and got a very impressive mark for Yamaha Dhoom YD70.

Panther Motors Recalls P150 and P50 Motorcycles Trikes for Parking Brake Defect
(Editors Note: This is NOT the Panther Motorcycle Company. Panther Motors makes 3-wheeled trike-like vehicles.) These motorcycles (trikes) fail to conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 122, "Motorcycle Brake Systems." The standard requires a strictly mechanical form of engagement of a motorcycle parking brake, whereas the parking brake on these motorcycles relies in part on hydraulic pressure.
434 units are affected.
Check out my Motorcycle Recalls feature for more details.
